With a headlamp to guide him, long before the sun touched the trees at Great Shiplock Park, Michael “Iron Mike” Wardian set off for a run on the Capital Trail. For many, a leisurely run or ride along the Trail is a favorite pastime; for Mike, this run was something entirely different. With his sandals strapped tight, a fierce determination, and a steady playlist of AC/DC and Metallica to fuel him onward, he set out for a 51.2-mile run from Richmond all the way to James City County. When he crossed the final mile marker, only 6 hours, 22 minutes, and 12 seconds had passed, and a new Fastest Known Trail Time was officially set for the Virginia Capital Trail from Great Shiplock Park (MM 51.2) to the Jamestown Trailhead (MM 0).
No stranger to challenges, Mike is known around the world for his incredible endurance feats, which include a staggering 300+ marathons, 100+ ultramarathons, multiple U.S. titles, and a world-record seven-day string of back-to-back ultramarathons spanning the globe, completed in 26 hours, 40 minutes, and 16 seconds. With accomplishments that span continents, it’s natural to wonder what drew Mike to the Virginia Capital Trail. We caught up with him to learn more about what drove him, how he prepared, and the moments that made this run unforgettable.
What Inspired You To Tackle the Fastest known time (FKT)?
“I was inspired by my buddy Kyle LaFerriere. He had done the trail before and I knew how much he liked it. I had seen it open a couple years ago before Kyle did it and I had always wanted to do it, so I took the opportunity this past weekend.
I knew I had great fitness coming off 7 x 50 K races in seven days on seven continents, so I wanted to utilize that fitness and try to execute all day. Mentally, I just had to rein myself in pace-wise but keep having fun.”
What Strategies Kept You Going & What was the Biggest Challenge You Faced?
“I use a lot of positive talk to myself, but also a lot of music – AC/DC ‘Thunderstruck’ and Metallica. My favorite part – the people! So many great people joined me along the way, and I got to see so many people using the trail.”
“The weather is a factor every day, but it was perfect. So then the challenge became not going too fast too early and really holding back but still pushing a good pace. That just was so cool to see how well I did on that.”
What Helped Contribute to Your Success?
“The trail itself was a huge contributor to help me do as well as I did, as it always kept me interested and excited to see what was next. I would say my Teva Aventrail R2T sandals, too. They were designed perfectly for this type of surface and use case.”
Shoutouts from the Trail
“Big shoutout to my crew: Kyle and Ryan, Dave and Jeremey. I would like to thank all my sponsors and everyone that followed along. I think if I was going to do it seriously again for a record, I would have a bike crew with me the entire 51.2 miles. That helped a lot.”
A Huge Year Ahead
“I have a huge year in front of me. Next up, I have the Rock & Roll DC 1/2 marathon, then a 200-mile run for MedStar, followed by the Boston Marathon, London Marathon, and then running 2,600 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. After that, I start training in earnest for the World’s Toughest Row, which is 3,000 miles solo across the Atlantic Ocean. I’m also looking forward to a family trip to Greece together.”
Fun Trail Tidbits
Mike’s Cap Trail T-shirt slogan: I would put the bridges on it and the swampy parts at the end.
Mike’s Trail theme song: “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC. It was so cool seeing everyone else and how they do things.
Hitting that final milepost with a triumphant tap, Michael Wardian set a new Fastest Known Trail Time, proving what the human body and mind can achieve with focus and preparation. His record run highlighted the Capital Trail not just as a pathway, but as a place capable of testing limits. For Trail users and endurance athletes alike, it’s both a benchmark and an invitation to see what’s possible.
What personal record or milestone will you set on the Trail this year?
