DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION AND ACCESSIBILITY STATEMENT

At the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation, we believe all deserve access to safe, protected bike-and-pedestrian infrastructure and outdoor recreation. We believe that time spent in nature is good for our physical and mental well-being and that everyone deserves equitable opportunities to benefit from and feel welcome in the outdoors. We embrace the richness of perspectives, cultures, and experiences that thrive within the regions and communities we serve. We hold in high regard the diversity that shapes our communities and are dedicated to fostering an environment that reflects and supports the principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA).

Diversity:  We recognize and celebrate the variety of viewpoints, cultures, experiences, and backgrounds that characterize the communities along the Virginia Capital Trail. Our commitment to diversity extends to valuing all the unique histories and traditions that enrich the colorful fabric of our region.

Equity:  We are unwavering in our dedication to creating an inclusive and resilient community along the Virginia Capital Trail where all feel welcome, connected, and inspired. We are committed to eliminating barriers that stand in the way of equal access, ensuring that the benefits are available to all, regardless of background or circumstance.

Inclusion:  We stand firmly against any form of discrimination and are dedicated to establishing an inviting space where every voice is heard, respected, and valued. Our goal is for the Virginia Capital Trail to be a welcoming haven where people from all walks of life feel a sense of belonging and are encouraged to engage, contribute, and help shape our path forward.

Accessibility:  We foster partnerships that work to remove barriers, build programs, and provide resources that increase access and equity through outdoor recreational programs and experiences. We actively support programs that provide recreational and fitness programming for underserved communities.

We are steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that the Virginia Capital Trail's economic, environmental, and health advantages are available to everyone, with emphasis on communities that have been historically underserved. We recognize that a trail built on the principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility is not just a route for recreation but also a gateway to a fairer and more inclusive society.

Through ongoing learning, collaboration, and active engagement, we will continue to uphold these principles and integrate them into every facet of our organization.
