When most of us hear “half-century ride,” we think of a big athletic milestone, hours logged in the saddle, and training rides that build toward long-distance endurance. For others, it can sound a little too intimidating, best reserved for seasoned riders or long-distance veterans.
But for Evan, age 6, it was simple: because he just really likes to bike.
So much so, that he convinced his parents to join him on a two-day camping adventure along the Capital Trail. Over those two days, Evan rode the full 51.7 miles, turning a big distance into small, steady moments of exploration, snack breaks, and pure determination
We caught up with Evan to hear about his ride, in his own words.
Why did you want to ride the entire Capital Trail?
“Because I just really like to bike.”
How did you prepare for your big ride?
“Just thinking really about what I had to have, and then that kind of worked out well. For example, I had like some stuff that wasn’t really meant for biking but used it for the ride. I basically put some medical stuff in it and made a first aid kit, which really helped.”
What was the coolest thing you saw along the way?
“Seeing a dead possum. I also stopped at Five Fields for some pizza and they even gave me free stuff like some stickers and a t-shirt.”
What was the hardest part?
“Probably following the rules. And dodging the dead possum.”
What helped you keep going when you got tired?
“I took a break and had a snack, just had some water really.”
Did you make any new friends along the way?
“I got to talk to the owner of the pizza place (Five Fields) and also said hi to some people as we were biking.”
How did you feel when you finished the Trail?
“Just kind of like happy, and sad that I couldn’t do it any more. I was pretty proud.”
What would you tell other kids who want to try a big ride?
“If you can do 20 miles, then you can probably do the whole thing with your grown-up’s help or maybe over a few days. And even if you can only do 2 or 3 miles, you can still try and maybe not do the whole thing but as much as you can.”
