Adopt-a-Trail

The Virginia Capital Trail Foundation (VCTF) and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) have partnered together to release the Adopt-a-Trail Program (AAT) which will mimic VDOT’s existing Adopt-a-Highway Program.

Our vision for Our program is to ensure the capital trail is environmentally sustainable and to minimize litter.

Want to adopt a mile of Trail? Here are some important aspects to keep in mind:

- Every VDOT maintained mile of the Capital Trail is available for adoption in Henrico County, Charles City County, and James City County.

- When you adopt a mile of the Capital Trail, you agree to clean up that mile four times a year for two years. After two years, you will need to reapply.

- After at least two cleanups are completed and submitted to VCTF, your official adoption sign will be created (these cleanups should be at least one month apart from one another). It could take several months for your sign to be placed.

For details of the Adopt-a-Trail Program, please review the Adopt-a-Trail Guidelines and the Adopt-a-Highway Safety Guide. Please read these two documents before completing your application!

After your cleanup, if you are leaving the trash bags at your Mile Marker, please contact VDOT at the appropriate phone number or email address below so they can schedule a pickup:
